Fraudster in the U.S. using LAWPRO job title as part of impersonation
A home renovation payments escrow company in Texas brought to our attention that a person purporting to be Laura Borovich of Orlando, Florida contacted them claiming to be “Director, practicePRO / Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO)”. The purpose of the contact was to release money held in escrow. No employee by that name has ever worked at LAWPRO.
While the mailing address was given as Orlando, the phone number (858-504-7460) is in San Diego. Two email addresses were provided: [email protected] and [email protected].
We’ve seen a number of instances of Ontario law firms and lawyers being impersonated to further various fraud schemes, but this is the first time we ourselves have been targeted in such a way. There isn’t much that can be done to prevent impersonations like this, though we hope that publicizing the details will allow any future targets of the scam to discover the scheme with a Google search.
