An Ontario firm notified us that they received an email from the purported Diana Mills looking to retain them with regards to a collecting overdue payments resulting from a separation agreement.

This is a classic bad cheque scam that presents as legal matter requiring the assistance of a lawyer. In this scam lawyers will be duped into wiring real funds from their trust accounts after depositing a fake cheque received as payment from the debtor (who is part of the fraud). Here is the initial email sent by the fraudster to the lawyer:

Subject: NEED A FAMILY LAWYER !!!

My name is Diana R Mills. I am contacting your firm in regards to a divorce settlement with my ex-husband (James G Mills) who resides in Canada. I am currently on assignment to Hong Kong.We had an out of court agreement(Collaborative Law Agreement) for him to pay $700,900.00 plus legal fees. He has only paid me $76,000.
I hereby seeking your firm to assist in collecting the balance from him. He has agreed already to pay me the balance but it is my belief that a Law firm like yours is needed to help me collect the balance from my ex-husband or litigate this matter if he fails to pay as promised.

How to handle a real or suspected fraud
